Wearable Biosensors for Malaria Detection
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial aims to test whether a wearable device, such as a wristband or earphones, can detect malaria early by identifying biological signals before symptoms appear. Participants will receive either a malaria injection (PfSPZ Challenge, an experimental treatment) or a placebo. The trial will monitor changes in body temperature, heart rate, breathing, sleep, and more. Healthy adults who have not had malaria or lived in malaria-prone areas for over six months in the last five years may be suitable candidates. As a Phase 1 trial, this research focuses on understanding how the treatment works in people, offering participants the opportunity to be among the first to experience this innovative approach.
Do I need to stop taking my current medications for the trial?
The trial does not specify if you need to stop all current medications, but you cannot use antibiotics with antimalarial effects or medications that react with chloroquine or atovaquone-proguanil. If you're on these, you may need to stop them before participating.
What prior data suggests that these wearable biosensor devices are safe for detecting malaria?
Research has shown that the PfSPZ Challenge, a treatment tested for detecting malaria, is generally safe. In a study with 28 participants who had never had malaria, almost everyone tolerated it well, experiencing only minor side effects. This suggests the treatment is unlikely to cause serious harm and is considered safe. Participants experienced only mild to moderate side effects, which are common in many clinical trials.12345
Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Researchers are excited about the PfSPZ Challenge for malaria detection because it uses a novel method involving a controlled human malaria infection with live, but weakened, malaria parasites. Unlike traditional treatments that aim to cure active malaria infections, this approach focuses on early detection and vaccine development. This method allows scientists to study the body's immune response in a precise and controlled way, potentially leading to breakthroughs in prevention and early diagnosis. Additionally, the use of wearable biosensors in this trial could revolutionize how malaria is detected by providing real-time data and making the process less invasive.
What evidence suggests that this wearable device is effective for malaria detection?
Research has shown that the PfSPZ Challenge (NF54), which participants in this trial may receive, holds promise for early malaria detection. One study demonstrated that the PfSPZ vaccine, which operates similarly to the challenge, was more effective against malaria under optimal conditions. Another study found that the PfSPZ Challenge successfully infected 100% of participants who had never had malaria, proving its reliability in creating a controlled infection for research. These findings suggest that the PfSPZ Challenge can effectively detect malaria, crucial for early treatment.26789
Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?
This trial is for healthy men and non-pregnant, non-breastfeeding women aged 18-50 who can give informed consent. Women able to get pregnant must use effective birth control during the study. Participants must pass a comprehension test and be willing to follow all study requirements.Inclusion Criteria

Trial Overview
The study tests if wearable devices like wristbands or earphones can detect early signs of malaria infection before symptoms appear. Participants are randomly given either an injection with malaria parasites (PfSPZ Challenge) or a placebo, then monitored using biosensors and standard blood tests.
