What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial explores whether a new digital avatar program (EA-Avatar) can assist individuals aged 18-29 who have visited the emergency department due to suicidal thoughts or alcohol misuse. The study aims to determine if this virtual coach, combined with supportive text messages, can reduce alcohol use and suicidal thoughts, and if participants find it user-friendly. Participants will be divided into two groups: one will use the avatar program, while the other will use a free suicide safety planning app. The trial seeks participants who have recently experienced issues with alcohol or suicidal thoughts, own a smartphone, and are open to using digital support. As an Early Phase 1 trial, this research focuses on understanding how the digital avatar program functions in people, offering participants a chance to be among the first to experience this innovative support.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It's best to discuss this with the trial coordinators or your healthcare provider.

What prior data suggests that this digital intervention is safe for emerging adults?

Research has shown that the EA-Avatar program is generally easy to handle. A study on this digital tool found that it has manageable side effects for individuals dealing with suicidal thoughts and binge drinking. This indicates that the program does not cause major negative reactions or discomfort. It aims to help participants manage their alcohol use and suicidal thoughts effectively, with support from encouraging text messages and reminders. Although this trial is in its early stages, and detailed safety information might not be fully available yet, the absence of major problems in earlier trials provides some reassurance about its safety for participants.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about the EA-Avatar treatment because it uses a cutting-edge, avatar-guided digital intervention to tackle suicidal ideation and binge drinking. Unlike traditional treatments that often rely on in-person therapy or medication, EA-Avatar offers a virtual, engaging platform that combines alcohol use monitoring with skills to manage triggers of suicidal thoughts. This digital approach includes motivational text messages and resources for accessing outpatient care, making it a potentially more accessible and supportive option for young adults. The unique delivery method could foster hope and improve engagement, offering a fresh, tech-savvy way to address these critical mental health challenges.

What evidence suggests that this trial's treatments could be effective for suicidal ideation and binge drinking?

Research has shown that digital tools can aid mental health treatment. In this trial, the EA-Avatar program, which participants may receive, uses a virtual coach to help manage alcohol use and suicidal thoughts. Early studies found that participants considered the program easy to use and helpful for tracking behaviors. The program aims to provide ongoing support and strategies to reduce harmful thoughts and actions. Initial feedback suggests it could effectively reduce alcohol misuse and suicidal thoughts among young adults.12467
