What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial tests a new virtual reality program called Amani for individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD). The goal is to determine if Amani can enhance coping skills and reduce pain and loneliness through mindfulness exercises, educational content, and virtual group sessions. Adults with SCD who visit the Massachusetts General Hospital Sickle Cell Disease Center and understand English may qualify. As a Phase 1, Phase 2 trial, this research aims to understand how Amani functions in participants and assess its effectiveness in an initial, smaller group, providing a unique opportunity to contribute to innovative treatment development.

What prior data suggests that the Amani virtual reality intervention is safe for adults with sickle cell disease?

Research has shown that virtual reality (VR) can safely help manage pain. Although Amani, the VR tool for sickle cell disease, remains under evaluation, VR is generally well-tolerated. Studies examining its use for various health issues have found it typically safe, without serious side effects.

In other studies, patients using VR reported few problems, mostly minor ones like dizziness. As a digital tool, Amani avoids the risks associated with medications, such as allergic reactions. Overall, the safety data for VR appears promising, but further research is needed to confirm Amani's safety for individuals with sickle cell disease.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Unlike the standard of care for sickle cell disease, which often involves medication, blood transfusions, and pain management techniques, Amani offers a unique approach through virtual reality. This treatment integrates mindfulness-based pain management exercises and psychoeducational modules to help patients develop better coping strategies. Additionally, Amani includes facilitated group sessions in virtual reality, which helps reduce feelings of isolation and fosters peer support. Researchers are excited about Amani because it offers a holistic, immersive experience that could improve quality of life for patients with sickle cell disease by addressing both physical and emotional needs.

What evidence suggests that Amani is effective for sickle cell disease?

Studies have shown that virtual reality (VR) can help manage pain for people with sickle cell disease (SCD). For example, VR has effectively reduced pain during sudden painful episodes, which people with SCD often experience. Research also indicates that using VR alongside regular treatment can significantly reduce daily pain and improve movement and quality of life in children with SCD. In this trial, participants will receive the Amani program, a VR-based supportive care intervention specifically designed for adults with SCD. These findings suggest that VR programs like Amani might also help reduce pain and improve well-being in adults.26789
